Guide to Fine Wine
One of the best places to start is by looking at vintages. These are simply the years in which the grapes were picked to be turned into wine. Different regions will have different vintages with many producers within a region often having the same year as the best vintages - but not always! This will most commonly be because the conditions for growing (weather, sun, soil condition etc) will be similar across a specific region. But of course different chateaus or wineries may have had a particularly good year in what was for everyone else an average year so they may release a vintage as they felt their crop was particularly excellent. There are any number of vintage guides available but a few we recommend are listed here:

http://www.wine-pages.com/resources/vintage.shtml
Another ways of looking for fine wines is to look for which producers/chateaus have consistantly produced very high standard wines that build into a collection of very fine wines. Most importantly have a good read through the description given by the merchants in the fine wine table above.
Here is a list of some of the most famous fine wine producers from across the Old and New World:
Antinori
Caymus
Cheval Blanc
Dom Perignon
Haut Brion
Lafite Rothschild
Latour
Leoville Barton
Margaux
Mouton Rothschild
Opus One
Ornellaia
Penfolds
Petrus
Pingus
Romanee Conti
Sassicaia
Silver Oak
Solaia
Torbreck
Vega-Sicilia
Yquem
Any of the vintages from these producers will set you well on your way to experiencing the best of the best fine wines in the world.
