Chianti is one of the flagship wines of Italy, rivalled only by the Barollo from Piedemont.
This is the star wine from Tanute Poggio, the oldest family estate from among the ‘Gruppo Cassaleone – the seven women winery, run by sisters and cousins from one family. They can proudly boast vineyards in some of the finest regions of Tuscany – areas Maremma, Siena, Chianti and Montalcino. The winery lies within the Castellina in Chianti in the classico area of the region. To gain even greater richness and depth in their wines, they tend to give their grapes a long maceration with their skins and, in this wine, added dried Sangovese grapes in the second half of the fermentation to lend a little more “Amarone” style of dark black cherry fruit to the redcurrent and plum notes. This wine is pure Sangovese taken from elevated, sloping vineyards to ensure concentration, then aged for a year in large oak casks and a further six months in a bottle.
Elegant and full flavoured, this wine is drinking very well, but will continue to improve for another year or so. It is essential to let the wine breathe for a minimum of 1 hour, preferably in a decanter to appreciate anything like the best the wine has to offer. This serious wine will go excellently with duck, pork any of the sweeter meats as the rich yet tart nature of the wine cuts through and compliments excellently. Will be at its best before the end of 2012.
